EEN RODE ROOS - A RED ROSE

This rose I have already described on July 5th, 2014.  Athough I do not want to repete myself, I just have a few things to tell about.

This is my second rose with the same name. The first is still living, but that's it, it is more of a survival. That first rose is at the sunny side against the fence between other climbing roses outside of the grden.  I thought the perfect spot for this rose, but unfortunately she reacted differently.  In the meantime she is already 6 years at the same place and only a few short branches have formed which also die off in the course of the year. At this moment she has two buds on bare branches, so sad.

Meanwhile I saw rose 'Guinée'  for two years by chance in a large garden centre not far from our home, while I had ordered the first 'Guinée at a specialized rose nursery. I could not resist buying a new one to try on another spot in the garden.  At home I walked three laps in the garden to find a suitable spot. At last I planted the rose against the pole of the bird feeder house and thought: "We shall see".

At random the bird feeder stands close to the greenhouse where I regularly walk, so more attention to the rose and additional fertilizer.
Last year July I wrote that this rose finally met my expectations, the rose showed some flowers.
But this year......After the early flowering yellow roses and the also red rose 'Étoile de Hollande', it is the first rose in full bloom, even the ugly birdfeeder looks pretty.
I am totally in gloria!

EEN FIJNE HUIS EN TUIN WEEK - A LOVELY HOME AND GARDEN WEEK

This week I only had to go out for some family visits in the afternoon, been fine at home for the rest of the week.  At this time of year Snarf and I particularly enjoy our morning walks, we wander in clouds of cow parsley, fields of buttercups, fragrant rapeseed and plowing arduously through the knee-high grass on the dike. When Snarf is on the dike he is wet and his fur is full of little yellow petals, my trousers are wet well above my boots.  Home again, we do our usual stroll in the garden, thereafter 15 minutes coffee, with Snarf in the chair across from me. Then some household chores and hooray.....we can go out gardening. Now and then we were chased inside by a heavy shower or hailstorm but that did not harm the fun, because we could use that rain very well.

When I open the door early in the morning, Rens, the neighbour's horse is already peeking at me, and as I wish him a Good Morning, he focuses his ears.

The jackdaw keeps watch on the dovecote where they have their nest for the third year.  Each year they choose another loft.

The off leash area for dogs is only 200 meters from our house and is very large.  Except a few bird nesting areas, dogs are allowed off leash in the whole 'Rotte' lakes area.  I often go for a short drive by car,  so that we walk every day of the week somewhere else.  Arrived at the 'Rotte' it looks like it will be a wonderful day, but nothing is more changeable than the weather, it can turn quickly.

At first glance this looks like a bad picture, but it is not.  Between the cowparsley runs a narrow ditch, reflecting the trees on the background.

I stand by the river and enjoy, we live in a vey nice real Dutch area. Is that true??  In the comments I often read: " you live in such a nice area".  However, photos don't lie, but can give a more or less distorted view. Moreover you are inclined to show only the beautiful things.  On above photo I was on the path behind the rapeseed and watched to the right, then I walked a 100 meters and looked straight ahead across the water..............

and saw this..... I've zoomed in on it, in real it is more far away.  It is a new district of Rotterdam, Nesselande.  A less pretty sight, but so it is.

I walk on slowly, stand still and look to the left, I see this, beautiful is not it.......

I have to go on, somebody is waiting for me.

Yellow Irises have started to flower too.

After Snarf's paddling we go home.

Where the fragrant lilies of the valley in front of the house continue to spread in the gravel.

And that one single huge white tree peony won't stop blooming, due to the cold weather it is already blooming for about 14 days.  However, today the big crepe paper petals have fallen.

This wonderful ´black widow´ is rampant throughout the garden and the sister of this Geranium phaeum, the white variety does very well too. In the meantime we have quite a lot of crossings with pink and lilac colours.

There are many Geraniums in the garden, of which some have started to flower, I´m not quite sure about their names and I´m not going to check this now.

Columbines, always magnificent and each year it´s a surprise which new colours are coming up. Wanted to write a special blogpost about the columbines but keep it for another year, there are so many blogs passing about columbines at the moment.

We go inside and who is coming with us, mother blackbird.  There are many birdnests in our garden. This blackbird is a clever one and found an easy feeding place for her offspring.  She tripped inside and found round the corner of the door Snarf´s bowl, that was a great discovery..... The door is almost always open, so she went and came for dogcrunchies.  Later the 3 fat young ones even came on the porch.  I wanted to photograph them but I´m not good in it, put the bowl on the doormat but the photos are not up to much.  Made a collage of several attempts. The young blackbirds are grown up I suppose for I don´t see and hear them anymore, but mother blackbird is the first one in the morning to see if there is something in the dog bowl.  Once I was in the drawing room and heard a loud whistling, the blackbird was in the middle of the kitchenfloor, whistling as if she was in the highest tree.

After having coffee we go gardening and Snarf is ready again for a next game.

Bedankt Hanneke.

When I´m working I see that Amsonia orientalis is already starting to flower, I love the metalic blue colour of these flowers, despite they are difficult to combine with other flowering plants.
Quite by chance, there is a flourishing grass species behind, at first glance I thought it to be a nasty weed. Then I remembered a garden friend gave this grass species to me last year.  At that time I did not know where to plant it, so I put it just somewhere. The combination of the Amsonia and the grass plumes is wonderful, guessed right.

As if I have nothing else to do, Snarf keeps me busy.  Peeking behind the sundial (he thinks I don´t see him, haha) to ´cheese´, a squeaky toy of a mouse on cheese.

As I wrote already we had some heavy showers this week. We ran inside and made in the meantime a cheesecake, when finished we could go back outside to continue edging the grass. The spade was patiently waiting for us next to the path.

And Snarf continued his funny games.

In the meantime the snowball shows snowballs high in the sky and the Ceanothus is creeping across the concrete floor.

Witte Alliums bloeien in de bovenste border.

White Alliums are flowering in the upper border.

By the next shower we go into the greenhouse, there is so much to do, but I also enjoy and make pictures.  I´m walking around with my camera this week already for three days to take photos of all kind of things.  The Primula auriculas are blown and put outside on the whatnot, there is space for other ´shows´.  I made a collage of the photos with flowering plants in the greenhouse.  The Calla on the picture I took from Madeira years ago. I hate Calla flowers, but they are a memory to the many times we were on Madeira.  The Cistus, already many years old, with nasty yellow leaves at the moment, shows buds and one beautiful flower.  The Erigeron karvinskianus, also a treasure from a holiday, is everywhere, outside, inside, in the ground and in pots.  The French Pelargoniums are new and look nice in the greenhouse during summer.  The Clematis, I thought it was ´Lady Northcliff´ was removed from the centre of the garden, changed in grass. I was in doubt if the 20 years old Clematis would survive transplanting, I tried it and put it in the greenhouse, first flower is there..... And then the Jasminus officinalis. That one is for some years in the greenhouse in the ground and is growing over an old chair.  She is almost in full bloom. When entering the greenhouse a heavy intxicating smell meets you.  This is too much fragrance, I don´t like it anymore.

The lilac is in full bloom and I cut some branches for a bouquet together with Cotinus.

This coffee pot I bought in Friesland on a fair at a flea market stall, I had not yet a coffee pot........

That was about what I have been doing this week, just simple life, little pleasures at home, but I love to keep running.

Wens jullie allen heel fijne Pinksterdagen!

Wish you all a lovely weekend!

DE EERSTE ROZEN / FIRST ROSES

Slowly but surely roses are starting to show their blooms, one of the first in our garden is Rosa banksiae 'Lutea'.

In this time of year there is so much to show and/or to write about the garden and also outside the garden that I do not know which subject to choose and where to start, resulting in postponement.  Daily blogging is not an option too, with so much additional gardening as weeding, mowing, fertilizing, watering, planting and transplanting of seedlings and cuttings, and putting sometimes heavy containerplants on their summer place, there is not enough time left. This all together is called gardening.
After much doubt I chose for my first flowering roses.

At the foot of these roses are still some Narcissus poeticus var. recurvus flowering and Clematis 'Guernsey Cream' is crawling up. A more or less accidentally successful combination of shapes and colours.

I'm very pleased Rosa banksiae 'Lutea'  is doing so well so far. This not so hardy rose was for years in the greenhouse flowering in April with her pale yellow flowers.  After about 10 years she gave up and died slowly.  Before that, I took cuttings which rooted all and after a year I put them all outside against the fence on the roadside. A number of them did not survive first winter outside by heavy frost. But next two very mild winters have caused this wonderfull bloom.

This is the inside of the fence in the garden, where a young Acer pseudoplatanus 'Brilliantissimum'  just shows her foliage.

And this is outside, along the road, next to the gate Rosa 'Étoile de Hollande' starts flowering.

Rosa 'Canary Bird' was the first one, she shows her blooms already 3 weeks.

The climbing rose 'Guinée' is not the easiest rose, she likes pampering and warmth.  After two failures this one grows very well and I think I've found the right spot because she is also very early with her flowers.  Unfortunately the pictures don't show the deep red colour, I'll try it again on a rainy day.

Thank you very much for the nice comments on my previous post about Bluebells.
I wish all my readers and followers a wonderful week with possibly lots of garden pleasure!
